HONG KONG, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to recent erroneous remarks by certain U.S. politicians regarding anti-China rioter Jimmy Lai.
Those remarks have distorted facts and interfered in Hong Kong's judiciary, the spokesperson said.
The 855-page verdict, 156 days of public hearings, and all other evidence of the case have fully demonstrated that Lai was a primary planner and participant in a series of incidents aimed at destabilizing Hong Kong and undermining China, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said that the trial process was open and transparent and the verdict was based solely on facts and evidence. However, certain U.S. politicians have chosen to turn a blind eye to all these, engaging in nothing but politically motivated manipulation with ulterior motives.
These U.S. politicians have interfered in Hong Kong's judiciary, seriously violating principles of international law and fundamental norms of international relations, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson urged relevant U.S. politicians to respect the rule of law in the HKSAR, immediately cease shielding anti-China rioters, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal matters.
