HONG KONG, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The legal basis for the Chinese government's jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is China's Constitution and the HKSAR Basic Law, and the United Kingdom (UK) has no sovereignty, jurisdiction or right of supervision over Hong Kong, said the Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR on Friday.
The remarks came after the UK released a so-called six-monthly report on Hong Kong, in which it smeared the development of the HKSAR and made irresponsible remarks about Hong Kong affairs.
The office expressed strong condemnation and firm opposition against such attempts, said a spokesperson for the office.
"The core essence of the Sino-British Joint Declaration is about China's resumption of the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong. It did not grant the UK any right to interfere in Hong Kong's affairs after its return to the motherland," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said that the Chinese government bears the fundamental responsibility for maintaining national security in all local administrative regions, including Hong Kong.
The HKSAR has the constitutional duty to safeguard national security, and the implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance is entirely justified and beyond reproach, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson urged the UK side to face reality, correct its position and abandon its colonialism and condescending posturing. "The UK must respect China's sovereignty, immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, and cease using the six-monthly report for political manipulation," the spokesperson said.
