HONG KONG, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Monday strongly denounced and firmly opposed smearing attacks against the sentences handed down on Jimmy Lai and other defendants in a national security case.
Addressing slanders made by certain Western countries as well as anti-China media outlets, organizations and politicians, the spokesperson underscored that the court's Reasons for Verdict had clearly stated that Lai was not on trial for his political views or beliefs. The verdict is grounded in evidence and laws and the sentences are just, said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson refuted claims that the sentencing could affect press freedom in the HKSAR, stressing that the defendants have long been using news reporting as a pretext for endangering national security and destabilizing Hong Kong.
Noting that people with ulterior motives have been concocting lies about Lai's health conditions and details of his confinement, the spokesperson said that the Correctional Services Department of the HKSAR government has all along strictly followed the law to ensure a safe, humane, decent and healthy custodial environment featuring adequate lighting, good ventilation, as well as suitable and timely medical support.
The HKSAR will continue to prevent, stop and punish acts and activities that endanger national security in accordance with the law, said the spokesperson, calling on relevant parties to refrain from groundless attacks.
