Hong Kong police order evacuation of 6,000 people following discovery of WWII bomb

HONG KONG, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Police Force ordered an immediate evacuation of about 6,000 people on Friday after a wartime bomb was discovered at a construction site in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island.

The bomb disposal operation will begin at 2 a.m. local time on Saturday and is expected to be completed within the day, according to the police.

The bomb, identified as an aerial explosive from World War II, measured about 1.5 meters in length and weighed some 1,000 pounds, according to sources.

Workers at the construction site discovered the bomb and reported it to the police on Friday morning. After assessment, the police confirmed that the bomb remained potentially functional and required high-risk on-site disposal, prompting the emergency evacuation.
