HONG KONG, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's retail sales went down by 0.1 percent in August compared with a year ago, official data showed Friday.

The value of total retail sales in August was provisionally estimated at 28.6 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 3.64 billion U.S. dollars), the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said in a report.

The revised estimate of the value of total retail sales in July increased by 4.1 percent compared with a year earlier. For the first eight months of 2022 taken together, it was provisionally estimated that the value of total retail sales decreased by 1.5 percent from a year ago.

A spokesman of the HKSAR government said that the value of retail sales posted a marginal year-on-year decrease in August against a high base of comparison, while on a seasonally adjusted month-to-month comparison, the value of retail sales continued to increase.
