BRATISLAVA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The new ice hockey season of the Slovak premiership Tipos Extraliga brought upon a surprisingly bad start for last season's runner-up HK Nitra, who suffered another five-goal whipping and slumped to the bottom of the standings on Sunday.
HK Nitra are having a tough time getting the wheel rolling in the new season, losing to HK Poprad 5-1 away in their second match after a defeat by Nove Zamky in the season opener by the same score on Friday.
The home team stretched their lead to 3-0 early in the second period, and although Nitra tried to rally by cutting the deficit to 3-1, Poprad sealed the win with two more successful shots in the final stretch.
"We are still having trouble scoring, which started in pre-season. It was a cruel defeat today but we have to move on. We started off well but suffered three consecutive penalties which cost us a lot of energy," Nitra's new coach Normunds Sejejs said in a post-game interview.
HK Dukla Ingema Michalovce managed to overcome HC'05 Banska Bystrica 3-2 despite trailing twice and moved to the top of the standings.
"Prior to the match, my guys were telling me that it is not easy to win in Banska Bystrica and they were right. We managed to find a way to score the third goal. It's a valuable victory," Michalovce's new coach Tom Coolen said.
Elsewhere, both HKM Zvolen and HC Grotto Presov claimed thrilling overtime victories.
League leaders HC Slovan Bratislava had a day off on Sunday as their opponents HC Kosice had to postpone the match as the team was trying to secure a smaller stadium due to high electricity prices.
