HONG KONG, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong on Wednesday recorded 16 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 13,082, according to data from the Center for Health Protection.

The newly reported cases consist of nine imported cases, four cases epidemiologically linked with imported cases, two local cases and one case epidemiologically linked with a local case.

Thirteen of the cases involve mutant strains, while the mutation test results of the remaining three cases are pending, the center said.

Since the launch of a mass inoculation program in February 2021, more than 5.18 million people, or 76.9 percent of the eligible population, have taken at least one shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, while about 4.73 million, or 70.3 percent of the eligible population, have taken two doses.

Meanwhile, 716,537 people in Hong Kong have taken the third booster shot as of 8:00 p.m. local time Wednesday.
