WELLINGTON -- New Zealand is ready to assist Tonga in its recovery from recent undersea volcanic eruption and tsunami, senior government officials said on Tuesday.

"Following the successful surveillance and reconnaissance flight of a New Zealand P-3K2 Orion on Monday, imagery and details have been sent to relevant authorities in Tonga, to aid in decisions about what support is most needed," New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said in a statement. SYDNEY -- Australia recorded its highest ever number of COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, as the outbreak continued to push up the hospitalization rates to record levels.

A total of 74 COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the country's three worst-hit states, including 36 from New South Wales (NSW), a record high number the state has recorded in a single day. (Australia-COVID-19)

HONG KONG -- Two former Cathay Pacific flight attendants were arrested and charged with violating local anti-pandemic rules on Monday, Hong Kong police said.

Investigations revealed that the two persons arrived in Hong Kong from the United States on Dec. 24 and Dec. 25, 2021 respectively. During medical quarantine, they had conducted unnecessary activities on Dec. 25 and Dec. 27, respectively, breaching Hong Kong's Prevention and Control of Disease Regulation. NEW DELHI -- India's COVID-19 tally rose to 37,618,271 on Tuesday, as 238,018 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

This is the sixth consecutive day when more than 200,000 new cases were registered in a day in the country. (India-COVID-19)
